Beginning Band Equipment

 Beginning Band required equipment lists



Flute

  • Folding music stand

  • Tuning rod (Make sure the flute comes with one)

  • Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (Red book)

  • Small cotton cloth to use for a swab (can be part of an old t-shirt)


Clarinet

  • Folding music stand

  • Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (Red book)

  • Box of Rico reeds #2.5 hardness to start** (or at least 4 reeds)

  • Reed guard to hold four reeds*

  • Cork grease*

  • Swab (silk is best-doesn’t get stuck as easily as the felt swab)*

  • Mouthpiece cap (should come in the case but if not ask them to include one)

Saxophone

  • Folding music stand

  • Tradition of Excellence book 1 (Red book)

  • Box of Rico reeds #2.5 hardness to start (or at least 4 reeds) (Vandoren reeds are fine as well)

  • Reed guard to hold four reeds

  • Cork grease

  • Swab (silk is best doesn’t get stuck as easily as felt swab)

  • Mouthpiece cap (should come in case but if not ask to be included

  • Neck strap (neotech is softest  but any will do and can be put under school collar to maintain comfort)


Trumpet

  • Folding music stand

  • Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (Red book)

  • Valve oil*

  • Slide grease*

  • Snake*

  • Mouthpiece brush*

  • Preferably a 5C mouthpiece but can be 5C or 7C only


Trombone

  • Folding music stand

  • Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (Red book)

  • Slide cream (main slide)*

  • Small spray bottle*

  • Tuning slide grease (one behind your head)*

  • Cleaning rod

  • snake*

  • Mouthpiece brush*

  • 6 ½ AL mouthpiece preferred or 12C mouthpiece









Percussion

  • Folding music stand

  • Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (Red book)

  • 2.5 octave xylophone kit 

  • Kit contains xylo (bells), practice pad, stand for both

  • Tonal Energy Metronome app (4.00 on the app stores- I even use this in class daily). OR stand alone metronome

  • Medium rubber mallets*

  • Vic Firth SD1 general or equivalent drum sticks*

  • Stick bag*



There are maintenance kits available from Palen music. These will be a great value to get you started and make sure you have all you need to get going. 


Last item to recommend is the Korg TM60 metronome/tuner combo with the clip on contact microphone for the wind players.


Update for COVID or germs in general: you can purchase sani-mist spray for mouthpieces and reeds that you can spray on items after playing each day.

END OF YEAR ANNOUNCEMENTS

1) If you have a school instrument please make sure you have checked with me before taking it home for the summer.

2) If you are dropping band please fill out the end of band survey.

3) If you are switching instruments fill out the poll to see which day of the week works for summer band.

4) Have a blessed summer. Be safe and rest up. Don't forget to practice.

5) Summer is a great time for instrument maintenance. Trumpets and trombones need baths. Woodwinds get new reeds. Take your instrument to the music store for the once over to make sure it is in great shape before August.

Christmas Concert and Rehearsal

 Band we have the Christmas Concert coming up on December 13 @ the Miller Performing Arts Center at 7:00pm. This is all students 5-8 grade band and attendance is required.

IPB Band 6-8 grade will have rehearsal after school on December 6 from 3-5pm. Permission forms will go home on Tuesday. 

5th grade band instead of combined rehearsal will have sectionals on Mondays after school.
